Bhujangasana or Cobra pose. In Sanskrit, Bhujanga refers to ‘snake’. Belonging to the functional classification of Purvatana (Purva – East i.e. anterior part of the body) the purpose of this pose is to open up the front of the body where the trunk moves away from the legs. This creates an expansion of the chest, strengthens the spinal muscles and improves the mobility of the spine and posture. Energetically it is a very active pose which induces an extroverted state of mind. It also stimulates the digestive system and internal organs. It is important to keep the focus in the upper back whilst protecting the lower lumbar in order to prepare the body for more advanced backbends. Always intrigued by the origin of names, Emerald keeps my attention for its enchanting name: it comes from the Sanskrit “Marakata” or “the green of growing things” and later from the Persian name “smaragdus”. Apart from being a beautiful stone, Emerald made me dream of these far away countries that are dangerous for women. When I was studying at the GIA in LA, 30 years ago, I loved when we had conferences with passionate visitors sharing their experiences, supported by their photographs and videos. I was very intrigued one time by this cowboy looking man, a specialist of the Muzo emeralds. He explained to us how he would have been misled by some rough stones he had checked and finally bought one day. Coming back to his “hotel”, happy with his new treasures, opening the little special white folded paper, he discovered faded crystals which had lost all their colors in the cotton that was protecting them. Under the loupe, all the characteristics of a natural stone showed up, but he was not expecting that in the mine, tricks like dying stones would be used. It happened to him one time; it was the first and last one! I am sure that all the students that day would remember this forever. Your eyes see what you are looking for! Your brain is the driver and this is how we need to educate it, in order to see the unexpected. It is also interesting to approach the stone in unexpected ways, which can lead to feeling it. Known and sold in markets since 4000BC, it was already worshiped by the Incas and mentioned in the Bible. There are legends built over the centuries, Cleopatra being one of the famous ones. Emerald, found in the earliest mine in Upper Egypt, was placed on mummies to ensure rebirth. Pliny wrote: “no color is more attractive than their color…it is the only gem that satisfies without tiring the eyes”. It was used also as an antidote to poisoning. Mogul Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal, adored them so much that he engraved sacred texts into them, becoming his talismans. Hard enough to be worn as jewelry, 7.5 on Mohs scale, but still soft enough to be engraved.

CITRINE: Vitamin of the Soul Birthstone of November; stone of Aries, Gemini, Leo and Libra zodiac signs; and stone of the Solar Plexus or third chakra; Citrine is named after the old adjective Citron, an adjective used for the yellow color which gave the name to the fruit citrus. Its yellow color goes from light orange to a brownish hint. The higher the saturation, the greater the value. From the crystalline quartz family, it is not rare to find high quality clear stones. On the Mohs scale, it has a hardness of 7 which makes it a good stone for jewelry use. Mines are found in France, Spain, Russia, U.S, Brazil and few other countries.
